3 of LAB Elite win this Weekend

Last Friday, three of our LAB Elite went into competition and came out victorious. Tim Welch and Sean O'Malley went into Montana and came out with two impressive submission victories. Tim caught his opponent in an armlock just 30 seconds into the first round, and "Sugar" caught a triangle choke on his opponent early in the second round.

Tanquinho Mendes, Black Belt world champion, went into his fight at Legacy FC looking to extend his undefeated record.  Tanquinho was dominant, winning via rear naked choke just 40 seconds into round one.

Very proud of all three guys, and the hard work that led to these results.

Good job!

Good Weekend for Our LAB Elite

Ashley ran his record at Heavyweight to an impressive 5-1 with a demolition over his opponent in Rage in the Cage in Arizona.  Ashley is a tough son of a gun , and is ready for bigger challenges in the future.

Congratulations to both these classy athletes, we are so proud of them!

LAB  Elite Represent at UFC Las Vegas

David Michaud and Mitch Clarke traveled to Las Vegas to take part in UFC 173 on Memorial Day weekend.  David was making his debut, while Mitch was competing in his fourth UFC event.

David performed very well, but ended up on the wrong side of a split decision.  We are excited for David to be where he belongs, and are looking forward to his next performance.

Mitch was competing against a highly touted opponent in Al Iaquinta.  Al got the better of the first round, but Mitch came back to sink in a tight D'arce choke in the second round, putting the tough Iaquinta to sleep.  This second round submission earned him a performance bonus and set the Canuck on a two fight win streak in the UFC.  Congratulations to both young men on fantastic performances, we are so proud to be part of your team.  Way to go!!

Michael De la Torre Makes UFC Debut

Michael De la Torre got the call a week ago asking if he would like to accept a fight on short notice and up a weight class.  Normally, the answer would be no, but this time the UFC was on the other line.  Mike eagerly accepted the offer, and went to Qubec, Canada determined to get the win.  The contest was hotly contested and ended with Michael on the short end of a controversial split decision.  While disappointed with the loss, Michael impressed a lot of folks with his toughness and skills.  Great work Mike, so proud of you and excited for your future.  Welcome to the UFC!

Ups and Downs

Last weekend The LAB Elite sent two into competition: Jocelyn Lybarger and Frank Ramsey.  Frank went back to his home state of Montana to fight, but came up short.  One mistake is all it takes in this game but Frank will be back better than ever.

Jocelyn fought her fourth bout in her pro career and put on a dominant performance at RFA14 in Cheyenne, WY.  Jocelyn is a hard worker and has improved vastly over the last couple of years, running her pro record to 3-1.  Her next venture will be trying out for the Ultimate Fighter reality show in Las Vegas later this month.

We are always going to win some and lose some, but it is our effort that will continue to define us as we go forward. Congratulations to Jocelyn and Frank, we are very proud of you both!

Tonight our Elite Team went 8-0! At Duel for Domination, Jordan Johnson, Tanquinho Mendes, and Drakkar Klose all won their pro debuts in the very first rounds.  Jordan and Drakkar had dramatic TKOs, and Tanquinho had some nasty ground and pound before finishing with a perfect armlock.  Brandon Newport, Adel Altamimi, and Alex Arredondo all won amateur bouts. James Nakashima was ready to make it another win, but his opponent no-showed at the weigh-ins.  Alex Brunnen won in England, and Scott Holtzman kept his perfect record intact by winning in Virginia.  Love this team and the high level that they represent.  What a great day!

In Virginia, undefeated XFC Lightweight Champion Scott Holtzman will look to continue his dominant ways at PFC 9.  Also, in England, Alex Brunnen will look for victory inside the cage.

Gritz Dominates at WSOF

Chris Gruetzemacher, one of the Lab's first students, entered the ring for the first time in almost two years.  Facing UFC veteran Jon Gunderson, a man with over 50 fights, this fight was supposed to test Chris, and see if he was ready for big time competition.  Boy, was he!  Recovered from knee surgery, Gritz ran his record to an amazing 12-1, and ran his win streak to 11 in a row by mauling Gunderson for 3 solid rounds.  We are so proud of Gritz for the fortitude he showed throughout his comeback, and the passion he brings to the ring every time he fights.  Good job Gritz, we are very proud of you!

(click on the photo to take a link to the fight)

Alex Contreras wins at WFF

Alex Contreras, one of our youth wrestling coaches at the Lab, went into the ring Saturday night and came out with a hard fought win.  Alex's opponent missed weight, but Alex handled it like the pro he is, and took care of business.  Congratulations Alex, well done!

Chris Gruetzemacher to make return to the ring at WSOF

It's been almost two years since Gritz last fought, a dominating finish of Roli Delgado under the ShoFight banner.  A knee injury sidelined the hot prospect, but now he is ready to go out and do his thing once again.  Chris is one of the LAB's first students, and we are very proud to have him represent our team, our family.  Good luck this weekend Gritz, we know that you will have a great night!

Fresh off of our AZBJJF tournament, our BJJ competitors headed out to the NAGA tournament to try their hands in the No gi competition and the did great!

There were many adult gold medalists, and our kids team took home 7 medals with only 10 competitors.  It always so great to see our team work hard and reap the benefits of that hard work.  Thank you to all who competed, we could not be more proud to be part of what you do!

Ty and Jordan Lorts with their Gold Medals

The team celebrating!

James and Ashley win at WFF

Saturday night in Tucson, AZ, two of our LAB Elite went into competition at the WFF event.  James Nakashima went first, and demolished his overmatched opponent with a 40 second knockout.  James has been doing great and all of his teammates were excited to see him do his thing in the cage.

Ashley Gooch was next, and delivered with an impressive second round TKO.

Ashley had just had a fight pulled out from under him a week earlier, so we were happy to see him get in the cage and let his hard work shine.

We are very proud of both guys, and are so pleased that they had great performances. Congratulations!

Bryan Barbarena Wins at KOTC

Saturday, at the Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, AZ, The LAB Elite sent two men into competition.  Ashley Gooch had been training hard, but his opponent failed his pre-fight physical, and the fight was cancelled.  We are disappointed for Ashley, but his time is coming soon.

Bryan Barberena ran his pro record to an impressive 9-2 with a first round TKO.  His opponent was a good wrestler from Detroit, but Bryan laid the leather to him to earn a victory in the very first round.  Bryan is on a 5 fight win streak, all finishes, and the future looks bright for this awesome young man.  Way to go Bryan!

Andy Enz performs in New Jersey

It was great to have Andy Enz in camp for his bout at UFC 169 in New Jersey.

Though he came out on the wrong end of a decision, he showed a ton of heart and won a lot of new fans with his performance.  Andy has relocated to the LAB to continue his training, and we are so pleased to have as part of our family.  Congratulations on a great performance Andy, looking forward to many great memories in the future.

The LAB Elite go to Chicago

Saturday, on a frigid night in Chicago, The LAB Elite sent three fighters into the UFC on Fox 10 card. Yaotzin Meza went first, fighting a tough, hard fought battle against Chico Camus. Yaddi fought hard, but was on the wrong end of a tought decision loss.  Next up was Alex Caceres.  He fought a young up and comer, Sergio Pettis and finished him with a rear naked choke in the third round.  Last up was Benson Henderson fighting Josh Thomson in the main event.  This was a hotly contested fight, that ended with Benson having his hand raised at the end of the five round battle.  Alex won not only his fight, but also got the bonus' for Submission of the Night and Fight of the Night.  It was the first time we have had three fighters on the same card and it was awesome to have so many of our team members there to support them.  Thanks to everyone that has given their support, it is truly appreciated.  Can't wait to see what happens next!

John Moraga wins at UFC Fight Night 35

Last night, in Atlanta, John Moraga ran his UFC record to am impressive 3-1 as he defeated a game Dustin Ortiz by split decision.  Coming off his only loss in the UFC, John started slowly, but then got his rhythm and got the win. We are very proud of John's incredible work ethic and we are very excited for his future.  Good job Johnny!

These classes will be starting next Tuesday, November 26, and will be every Tues. and Thurs. at noon.  Your first teacher?  How about UFC standout Benson Henderson? Next up? UFC, WEC, Strikeforce vet and Bellator FightMaster Champion Joe Riggs.  This will be a great class and will be designed for folks of all levels to enjoy.  Look forward to seeing you there!

Two Lab Elite Victorious in Montana

Tim Welch and Frank Ramsey went back to their home state of Montana and put on fantastic performances on Saturday night.  Frank was up first and dominated his opponent through two rounds, forcing him to stay on his stool to start the third, earning him a TKO victory.  Tim put his guy to sleep early in the first round with a tight guillotine, giving his another notch on his professional record.  So proud to have both young men perform so well on such an important night.  Way to go guys!

Benson to Drive PIR Pace Car Today

Our own Benson Henderson has been chosen by the Phoenx International Raceway to drive the official pacecar today in the running of the Advocare 500. Always proud to see one the great athletes of today get paired up with a great organization like PIR.  Thanks to PIR for including us in the process, and hope to see everyone out at the race!

Joe Riggs wins Bellator's Fight Master Championship

Bellator MMA put together their first reality show, Fight Master, and invited some of the best 170 lb talent to compete.  One of the competitors was our own Joe Riggs. Joe won all his fights on the show, then, last Saturday, dominated Mike Bronzoulis to win the title of Fight Master.  Joe has been through a lot in his illustrious career, and this last win shows that he has plenty of victories still to come.  We are so happy to have Joe on our team, and love the smiles he brings to our gym on a daily basis.  Congratulations Diesel, you were fantastic!

Jordan Johnson wins Gold at No-Gi Worlds

Jordan Johnson traveled to Long Beach, CA, last weekend to compete in the No-Gi World Championship.  Jordan, and undefeated MMA fighter and Lab Elite member, mowed through the competition to win a Gold Medal in his category.  Jordan has become a fixture around the Lab and is a great example of what hard work can do.  Thanks for all your dedication Jordan, Congratulations!

Two Lab Elite Compete in England at UFC Fight Night 30

Jon Tuck and Bradley Scott competed in Manchester, England at UFC Fight Night  30.  Bradley came to Arizona for 9 weeks before his fight and  looked fantastic in his fight against Michael Kuiper.  Brad finished him in the very first round with a guillotine choke.  Jon Tuck was next and lost a tough decision to Norman Parke. Though the loss was tough, the future looks bright for this talented lightweight as he goes into the next stage of his career.  Both fighters make their teammates better and are huge assets to our team. Thank you guys for your hard work and fighting spirit., and congratulations on your performances.

Scott Holtzman and Luke Sanders Win Big at XFC 26

Two of our Lab Elite went into their home state of Tenessee and came out with dominant victories at XFC 26.  Luke came out and spent 6 weeks here for his camp and demolished his opponent, finishing by TKO early in round 2.  Luke is undefeated at 6-0, and is looking like a force to be reckoned with at 145 lbs.  This was Scott Holtzman's second camp here, as well as being an important part of Benson's camp for his last fight.  Scott defended his XFC Lightweight Belt and put a beating on his opponent in the process.  This win extended his undefeated record 6-0 and put the big leagues on notice about his skills.

Both young men are great people and supportive teammates and we could not be more happy and proud to be associated with them.  Congratulations guys, can't wait to see you again soon!

Two of the Lab Elite to compete in Abu Dhabi this weekend

Two of our very best head into competition this weekend at the most prestigious grappling tournament in the world; The Abu Dhabi World Championships.

Benson Henderson, former WEC and UFC title holder and BJJ Black Belt, takes his skills into China to compete in the 77 kilo division.

Augusto "Tanquinho" Mendes is one of the world's best, and most decorated grapplers, and is fresh off his 2013 IBJJF World Champion finish just a couple of months ago. Tanquinho will compete in the 66 kilo division.

We want to wish both of them safe travels and the best of luck, go get 'em guys!

Efrain Escudero wins in Miami

Efrain Escudero traveled to Miami to compete in the CFA fights against a very tough and experienced opponent, Luis Palomino.  This fight had all the earmarks of a tough fight and it lived up to that as both guys came to win.

Efrain earned a unanimous decision and ran his win streak to three when he beat the tough Palomino.  We are so proud of Efrain and our Elite team as they set the bar high week after week.  Congratulations Effy, well done!

Lab Elite Ammys Go 3-2 at D4D

Last night at Duel for Domination, the Lab Elite sent five into competition.  The night went very well, as our team went 3-2 for the evening.  Things started off great as Fabian Parra dominated his opponent, finishing him in an armlock in less than one minute. Next, Drakkar Klose went out and dominated his  opponent, earning a lopsided unanimous decision and running his impressive amateur record to an intimidating 7-0.  Adel Altamim and Alex Arredondo lost tough decisions in each of their bouts.  Jordan Johnson improved his undefeated record to 3-0, and won the D4D Heavyweight belt in an impressive all around performance.  We are very proud of these young men and the hard work they put in everyday.  Congratulatons guys, keep up the good work!

Joe Gemma and Vivian Freitas win Silver 10/5/2013

This weekend, at the Masters/Seniors World Championships, Joe Gemma and Vivian Freitas came home with Silver medals.  Vivian was competing in her first tournament as a purple belt, over came some nerves and really performed well to win her medal.  Joe fought his way through one of the biggest brackets of the tournament, winning four out of five matches on his way to the podium.  We are so proud of both competitors, not only for their performance this weekend, but also for their consistent hard work and leadership at the Lab.  Way to go guys, we are very happy for you both!

Victor Meza and Ashley Gooch Win at KOTC

What a great night for the Lab Elite at the Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, AZ.  Ashley Gooch earned a first round knockout of his experienced opponent, Allan Sullivan.  It only took one good hammer fist from Ash to send Sullivan to sleep, and the victory was sealed.

Victor Meza had his hands full with Benny Madrid.  Madrid was 8-0, and a well regarded prospect.

Vic's last two opponents were on a combined 17 fight win streak before they met Victor, and he made sure to stop them. It was a hard fought match, but anyone that knows Vic knows that he has the biggest heart anywhere, and that is what won him the fight.  We are so very proud of both of our guys, and excited to see what the future holds for them. Congratulations!

Alex Caceres Victorious at UFC 165

Alex "Bruce Leroy" Caceres has been at the MMA Lab for his last three fight camps.  He has come up 3-0 in those fights. Last night, at UFC 165 in Toronto, Canada, Alex had another great fight.  After losing a close first round, Alex came back to dominate the last two rounds of his fight with Roland Delorme. We are so happy and proud to have Alex on the team.  Thanks for the great energy you bring to the Lab Alex, and thank you for another great performance.

Efrain Escudero Dominates at Bellator 100

Everybody wants to take the next step in their fighting career.  A lot of lightweights feel like they can use Efrain Escudero as their stepping stone to the big time.  This has proven to be a mistake.  Last night, at Bellator 100, Zack Surdyka was the latest to make this mistake.  Efrain dominated him for all three rounds on the way to a lopsided decision victory.  Efrain has been a huge part of the success of our team, and we are so happy to see him perform so well.  Good job Effy, keep up the great work!

MMA Lab Ammys go 3-0 at Duel for Domination

Jordan Johnson, Alex Arredondo, and Adel Altamimi, went into this event ready to go, and came out with 3 victories.  All three young men finished their fights and lined themselves up for the D4D championship belts at the next event.  It is very exciting to see our younger fighters turning in great performance and we are very happy to have them on the team.  Congratulations guys, keep up the great work!

Tough Night for the Home Team

Benson Henderson and Jamie Varner went to Milwaukee to continue their winning ways, and were ready to do their thing at UFC 164.  Jamie began the night with a battle with Gleison Tibau.  Jamie put together a strong performance, but Gleison was awarded the controversial split decision.  Benson came up short in his bid to break the UFC record for Lightweight title defenses, ending up on the losing side in his fight to Anthony Pettis.  Although it is disappointing to come away with less than a victory, sometimes we learn the most from our losses.  Both of these strong young men will learn from these matches, and come back better because of them.  We could not be more proud to be associated with Benson and Jamie...thank you both.

Bryan Barberena wins at Fall Brawl

Congratulations to Bryan Barberena, who ran his record to an impressive 7-2 with a TKO win over Marcos Marquez at  the Fall Brawl in Fargo, ND.  Bryan moved down to 170 lbs. for the first time and looked impressive at this weight.  Looking forward to great things in the future from this young man!

Congratulations Bryan!
